A self-updating phone book app, 6degrees also lets users search for any person or keyword and find results from friends’ phones

6degrees, a self-updating phone book app that also lets users find people and places known to friends, has crossed 150,000 monthly active users in India, Co-founder and CEO Niranjan Rao told e27.

The firm also recently raised an undisclosed amount in seed funding led by TV Mohandas Pai, a serial investor and former CFO of Indian software giant Infosys, with participation from a group of other investors in the mobile and social space.

The app, commercially launched in June this year, lets you search for any person or keyword (like café or plumber) and find results from friends’ phone books with their permission. It also acts as a self-updating phone book, giving you automatic updates when friends change contacts, and lets you update friends with new details when you change them.

“If someone had told us in January that we’d be in this situation by the year-end, we wouldn’t have believed it. I think we’re lucky to have the kind of active investors we have now; our fear early on was that the idea of 6degrees was too radical and it required a big leap of faith,” said Rao.

The startup was founded in December last year by Rao and Arun Samudrala. Early last year, it had received a grant worth S$50,000 (under US$40,000) from the Singapore government.

6degrees is currently in talks with leading smartphone makers to integrate the app.

“Our smartphones are now our primary gateways to everyone important to us, and they will quickly become our personal assistants. Embedded in this rapidly-evolving context, 6degrees is approaching a most fundamental need — capturing, remembering and managing the contact information of all the people we want to stay connected with for us,” said Pai.

“By designing an end-to-end experience that aims to make our lives easier and save us time in a meaningful manner, 6degrees has the potential to create its own niche at the intersection of networking and productivity. I am looking forward to the blend of contextual intelligence and enhanced automation that 6degrees will drive to raise the bar on what our smartphones are capable of,” he added.
